Video Analysis

Watch this music video and then respond to the following questions.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=aT434G38OBg

How does this video relate to the book? In what ways does the book differ from the video? In Sudan, young people were not suppose to display their affection for another person their age. How do you think the people around Lacare and Okello felt when they were scene holding hands? Why do you think they abduct young children to help fight in the war?

I think the video corresponded to the book because it told of young love (Achak and Tabitha and the sisters.) Because PDA like that was seen as taboo, youngsters would often have to go off alone and be together, so I think Lacare and Okello probably felt like they were a bit exposed. I think the reasons they abducted children is because then the abductees would (probably) eventually morph to their current lifestyles and live on if they weren’t too old and burdened with memories of home. Also, another reason why children were abducted is because children are small, quick, and unimportant (as they were seen by some) and there were a lot of them.

Hey guys-
I like the fact that you've connected a modern artist with the Eggers book. It helps us all relate to what we are reading on a more universal level. -Mr. Kefor

How does this video relate to the book? It relates to the book when it comes down to how the villages are and the living situtations.

In what ways does the book differ from the video? The children in the book do not have to work like they did in the music video.

How do you think the people around Lacare and Okello felt when they were scene holding hands? They probably felt anger towards them because culture is so sacred and going against it is not a good thing.

Why do you think they abduct young children to help fight in the war?
Since they are young they can be brainwashed into fighting so that armys can get stronger and they won't lose too much if a child is killed.

The music video relates to the book in many ways. The way they live in the music video is similar to the settings in the book in small houses or huts. Also, there are so many children. Lacare and Okello were similar to Valentino and Tabitha since they liked to spend time together through such hard times that their community is going through. People around them when they held hands were most likely fustrated since they liked to spend time together at a time where there are so many people strugging. I think that children get abducted because the population of children is so large that loosing a child wouldn't do much damage.
